Perched in the highlands of Langkawi's interior, Gunung Raya Golf Resort occupies one of the most dramatic settings in Malaysian golf. The course climbs into the rainforest-covered slopes of Gunung Raya — the island's highest peak — placing golfers among ancient jungle canopy, cascading streams, and the kind of equatorial green that exists nowhere else in the world. Designed by Ronald Fream and opened in the 1990s, the layout uses the natural contours of the terrain rather than fighting them, producing elevation changes and jungle corridors that demand both course management and a clear head.
Playing here means contending with Langkawi's tropical climate: morning rounds can offer surprising freshness at altitude before the afternoon heat settles in. Wildlife sightings — hornbills, monkeys, monitor lizards along the fairways — are routine rather than remarkable.
Langkawi itself is a duty-free island and popular resort destination off the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia, drawing visitors from across Southeast Asia. The golf at Gunung Raya is very much part of that resort experience — scenic, memorable, and genuinely unlike anything a flatter coastal course can offer.
