Few courses in England carry the weight of expectation that Hotchkin does. Laid out across the heathland of Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire, it is widely regarded as the finest inland course in England — a bold claim that the course quietly justifies every time you walk it. Harry Vardon played the original layout, but it was Colonel S.V. Hotchkin who shaped the course into its modern form through the 1920s and 30s, and whose name it now bears. The English Golf Union eventually made Woodhall Spa its national headquarters, giving the club an official status that matches its stature.
What defines Hotchkin is its heather and its bunkering — deep, steep-faced, punishing hazards that demand precision rather than simply power. Miss the fairway into the heather and you are scrambling; find a bunker and you may be grateful just to advance the ball. The pines and silver birch frame every hole without crowding it, and the turf drains beautifully through all but the worst winters.
Lincolnshire is not a county that shouts about itself, and Woodhall Spa is a quiet, unhurried village that suits the course perfectly. This is golf that rewards patience and thought, played on ground that feels set apart from the rest of English inland golf.
