Few private clubs in the Bay Area carry the history and prestige of Lake Merced Golf Club. Founded in 1922 and designed by Willie Watson — the Scottish-born architect who also shaped several other Northern California classics — the course sits just south of San Francisco on the San Francisco Peninsula, occupying land that feels removed from the dense urban sprawl immediately surrounding it. It has hosted significant USGA and PGA Tour-affiliated events over the decades and remains one of the region's most respected private retreats.
The layout rewards thoughtful play over raw power, routing through mature trees with Lake Merced itself coming into view and into play at key moments. The course has a firm, traditional feel that reflects its era — strategic bunkering, natural undulation, and greens that demand precise approach angles rather than brute force.
Daly City sits at the edge of San Francisco, where the coastal fog rolls in regularly off the Pacific. That marine layer keeps the turf lush and conditions cool year-round, giving Lake Merced a distinctly Northern California character — green, atmospheric, and unhurried.
