Few golf courses in Colorado announce themselves quite like Redlands Mesa. Designed by Jim Engh and opened in 2001, it sits on the western edge of Grand Junction where the Colorado Plateau breaks into a fractured landscape of red-rock mesas, canyon rims, and high desert scrub. Engh, known for courses that work with dramatic terrain rather than against it, routed the layout across a series of natural mesas, letting the land's own geology dictate the drama. The result earned significant national attention quickly — Golf Digest ranked it among the best new affordable courses in the country shortly after opening, and it has remained one of Colorado's most distinctive public layouts.
Grand Junction sits in Mesa County at the confluence of the Colorado and Gunnison rivers, closer in spirit to Moab than to Denver. The climate is high desert: dry, sunny, and warm through most of the golf season, with the Grand Mesa — the world's largest flat-top mountain — looming to the east.
What stays with players is the constant interplay between the fairways and the void. Several holes play along or across canyon edges, and the panoramic views of the Book Cliffs and the Colorado National Monument give the round a scale that purely mountain courses rarely match. This is public golf worth traveling for.
