Few public courses in the Midwest have earned the kind of widespread respect that Spirit Hollow has. Designed by Jeff Blum and opened in 2001, it quickly established itself as one of Iowa's premier public layouts and has consistently ranked among the best public courses in the state — a remarkable achievement for a municipal facility operated by the City of Burlington.
The course plays through a dramatic stretch of southeastern Iowa terrain, where the land rolls and drops through wooded hollows, open ridgelines, and natural wetlands along the Des Moines River valley. That varied topography is the course's defining characteristic — each hole feels distinct, and players are asked to think carefully about angles and elevation changes rather than simply overpowering the layout. The natural setting does most of the heavy lifting aesthetically, and Blum was smart enough to let it.
Burlington sits on the Mississippi River in the far southeastern corner of Iowa, a region with genuine topographic character that sets it apart from the flatter agricultural landscapes most people associate with the state. Spirit Hollow is the area's strongest argument that you don't need to leave Iowa to find serious, memorable golf.
