Byggðarholtsvöllur

Eskifjörður sits at the end of one of the East Fjords' longest inlets, a small fishing and industrial town framed by steep mountainsides that plunge almost directly into Reyðarfjörður. It is about as far from the golf mainstream as you can get in Iceland — which is saying something — and Byggðarholtsvöllur reflects that frontier quality entirely. The course occupies the kind of terrain you simply cannot find anywhere else: volcanic rock, coarse grass, and a landscape shaped by glaciation rather than greenkeeping tradition.

Golf in the East Fjords operates on its own terms. Summer daylight is essentially unlimited, and rounds played at midnight under a pale Arctic sky are a genuine possibility from June through July. The weather can shift rapidly off the fjord, and elevation changes on this type of terrain mean the wind rarely behaves predictably. Visitors arriving from flatter, more manicured courses elsewhere will need to recalibrate their expectations — and likely their shot-making.

For the right kind of golfer, that is precisely the point. Courses like this one serve tight-knit local communities where the sport doubles as social fabric, and where the setting itself — raw, dramatic, authentically Icelandic — is the main event.
