Few municipal courses in America carry the psychic weight of Lincoln Park. Perched on the western edge of San Francisco above the rocky Pacific cliffs of Land's End, this is public golf at its most democratically spectacular — where weekend hackers share fairways with some of the most arresting coastal scenery on the continent. The Legion of Honor museum watches from the bluff above the 17th tee. Container ships drift through the Golden Gate below. It is genuinely difficult to keep your eyes on the ball.

The slope of 110 and course rating of 65.9 reflect something breezy and forgiving on paper — but San Francisco's marine layer, the unpredictable winds roaring off the Pacific, and some deceptively contoured terrain have a way of humbling anyone who arrives expecting a casual stroll.
