Few courses in southern England carry quite the historical weight of Stoneham. Laid out by Willie Park Jr. in 1908 on the common land north of Southampton, it stands as one of the great Edwardian heathland designs in a region better known for its coastal sailing than its golf. Park, the twice Open Champion and prolific architect behind many of Britain's finest layouts, crafted a course that works beautifully with the natural contours of the land — heather, pines, and firm, fast turf giving it a character closer to Surrey than the Hampshire coast.
Stoneham has long been regarded as one of the top members' clubs in the south of England, respected on the amateur circuit and consistently well-regarded in national rankings. The routing makes intelligent use of elevation changes across the common, rewarding precise ball-striking and course management over raw power. It is the kind of course that reveals itself gradually, with subtleties that take multiple rounds to fully appreciate.
Southampton itself is a city with serious sporting heritage, and Stoneham sits comfortably within that tradition — a proper, no-frills private club where the golf has always done the talking.
