Few golf courses anywhere in the world carry a reputation quite like this one. Teeth of the Dog at Casa de Campo is Pete Dye's masterwork — widely considered the greatest course in the Caribbean and one of the finest resort layouts on earth. Dye carved it from the rugged southern coastline of the Dominican Republic in 1971, and the name says everything: those sharp coral-and-limestone outcroppings that jut into the Caribbean Sea gave the course both its identity and its teeth. Local laborers worked by hand to clear the dense tropical vegetation, and Dye reportedly said the land itself designed the holes along the water.
7 of the 18 holes play directly along the Caribbean coastline, and those stretches rank among the most dramatic seaside golf anywhere outside of Pebble Beach or the Scottish links. The wind off the water is a constant factor, turning what might look like a manageable approach into something far more serious.
Casa de Campo sits near La Romana on the island's southeastern coast — a resort destination that has drawn serious golfers for decades. The broader complex includes 2 other Dye designs, but Teeth of the Dog is always the reason people come.
