Few heathland courses in England carry quite the atmosphere of Piltdown Golf Club. Laid out on the ancient common of the Sussex Weald, the course dates to 1904 and was shaped largely by J.F. Abercromby, one of the unsung masters of Edwardian design. Its low par of 68 reflects a layout built around precision and placement rather than brute length — this is a course that rewards course management and a controlled ball flight far more than power.
The setting is the thing. Piltdown Common sits amid heather, silver birch, and Scots pine, and the turf drains fast and plays firm in the manner of the great Surrey and Berkshire heathland tracks. The views across the Weald are quietly spectacular, and the sense that very little has changed here in over a century is part of the appeal. The course shares its postcode with the famous — or rather infamous — Piltdown Man archaeological hoax site, adding an odd footnote to an otherwise timeless place.
Uckfield is a modest market town in East Sussex, about midway between Tunbridge Wells and Lewes, and Piltdown sits just outside it with the unhurried character of a genuine members' club that has never needed to shout about itself.
