Strandarvöllur

Few courses anywhere demand as much attention to the sky as this one. Strandarvöllur sits along the Ytri-Rangá river in the Hella district of Iceland's South, where the flat, wind-scoured lava plain opens up to unobstructed views of Hekla — one of Iceland's most active volcanoes — brooding on the southern horizon. Playing here means constant negotiation with the North Atlantic wind, which can reduce a straightforward approach to a guessing game in minutes.

The course is a genuine local club layout, maintained by the Hella community and rooted in the tradition of Icelandic rural golf — unpretentious, honest, and built for people who play year-round regardless of conditions. The midnight-sun season draws visiting players who find the novelty of an 11 p.m. round under full daylight genuinely hard to shake.

The surrounding landscape does most of the heavy lifting aesthetically. Lupine-covered roadsides, glacial rivers, and the occasional distant glacier cap make the South Region one of the more atmospheric settings for golf in the North Atlantic, however humble the facility itself.
