Royal Course

Few layouts in the Algarve carry the pedigree of the Royal Course at Vale do Lobo, which has been one of Portugal's most celebrated resort destinations since the estate opened in the late 1960s. The course was shaped by Sir Henry Cotton — a 3-time Open Champion turned architect — and his work here reflects the same precision and demanding character he brought to his playing career. The Royal Course has undergone refinements over the decades, but Cotton's routing philosophy survives: fairways that reward positioning over brute force, and greens that punish anything but the right approach angle.

The Algarve's ochre cliffs, umbrella pines, and Atlantic light give Vale do Lobo an atmosphere that sets it apart from the golf resorts that followed in its wake. Almancil sits at the heart of what became Portugal's most concentrated stretch of serious golf, a corridor that includes Quinta do Lago and San Lorenzo nearby.

The course's signature moment is the par-3 16th, where the tee shot carries a dramatic ravine slashed through the cliffs — one of the most photographed holes in European golf and a genuine test of nerve regardless of how the rest of the round is going.
