Few English heathland courses carry as much architectural pedigree as Huntercombe. Laid out by Willie Park Jr. in 1901, it ranks among his finest works — a masterclass in natural routing across the Oxfordshire heathland between Henley-on-Thames and Oxford. Park's design philosophy, shaped by his championship pedigree and his belief that "a good player always goes for the pin," is evident throughout: the holes reward precision and strategic thinking over raw power, with well-placed bunkering and subtle ground contours doing much of the work.
The heathland setting gives Huntercombe its distinctive character — heather, gorse, and firm, fast turf define the experience across all seasons. This is proper English inland golf, where the ground game matters and reading the land is as important as reading the greens. The course plays to a par of 70, reflecting a design that prizes variety and craft over length.
Huntercombe holds the unusual distinction of having been owned outright by one member — the financier and collector Sir Frederick Mirrielees — for much of the 20th century, giving the club an intimate, unhurried quality that persists today. It remains one of the more authentic heathland experiences in the Home Counties.
