Barton Hills Country Club carries one of the most distinguished pedigrees in Michigan golf. The course was designed by Donald Ross, the Scottish-born architect whose fingerprints are on so many of America's most revered layouts, and it opened in the 1920s as a private retreat for Ann Arbor's most enthusiastic golfers. Ross's characteristic crowned greens, subtle fairway contours, and deceptive simplicity are very much in evidence here — a course that rewards precision and course management far more than raw power, and one that tends to reveal itself slowly over many rounds.
The setting along the Huron River corridor gives Barton Hills a sense of remove that feels genuinely earned. Mature hardwoods frame nearly every hole, and the rolling glacial terrain that defines this part of southeastern Michigan gives the routing natural drama without resorting to artifice.
Among private clubs in the Big Ten college town of Ann Arbor, Barton Hills occupies a particular place of quiet prestige — the kind of membership course where the emphasis falls on the golf itself, and where the Ross design continues to test and engage players generations after it was built.
