Few courses in Eastern Ontario have generated quite the buzz that Equinelle did upon opening. Designed by Doug Carrick, one of Canada's most respected contemporary architects, it was built as the centrepiece of a residential community south of Ottawa and quickly earned a reputation as one of the stronger private layouts in the province. Carrick's fingerprints are easy to read here — generous but contoured fairways, bold bunkering, and greens that reward thoughtful course management over brute force. The routing makes strong use of the natural terrain, with mature tree lines framing holes without feeling punitive.
Kemptville sits about 45 minutes south of Ottawa in the Ottawa Valley, where the landscape opens into rolling agricultural land fed by the South Branch of the Rideau River. The setting gives Equinelle a peaceful, unhurried feel that distinguishes it from the bustle of the capital's closer-in clubs.
As a private members' course anchoring a golf community, the experience here leans toward the refined end — well-conditioned surfaces, a comfortable pace, and the kind of atmosphere that rewards repeat play as you work out its subtleties.
