Suneagles Golf Club carries a history unlike most public courses in New Jersey. Built on the grounds of Fort Monmouth, the long-running U.S. Army installation that anchored the Jersey Shore's inland communities for over a century, the course served military personnel and their families for decades before opening more broadly to the public. When Fort Monmouth was decommissioned in 2011 under the federal BRAC process, the property's future — including the golf course — became a closely watched question for Monmouth County. The course has since continued operating as a public facility, retaining its military-era character amid the broader redevelopment of the base.
The surrounding region is genuine golf country. Monmouth County sits within easy reach of a strong concentration of public and private layouts, and the gently rolling terrain of the Jersey Shore's interior provides natural movement in the land without dramatic elevation change.
For a par-72 layout with public access in a densely populated corridor, Suneagles occupies an unusual niche — a course with institutional roots, a real past, and a landscape shaped by something other than the real estate market.
