Few golf experiences in the Midwest match playing alongside the Cascade River valley in Minnesota's North Shore country. Superior National at Lutsen occupies dramatic glacially carved terrain above Lake Superior, where the Sawtooth Mountains roll down toward the largest of the Great Lakes. The course weaves through dense boreal forest — birch, aspen, and spruce — with elevation changes that demand creative shotmaking and reward players who manage their way around rather than simply overpower it.
Lutsen itself sits in one of Minnesota's most celebrated outdoor recreation corridors, drawing visitors for skiing, hiking, and fall color that ranks among the most vivid in the Upper Midwest. Superior National fits that spirit: it plays like a genuine wilderness experience, not a manicured resort show piece, with natural topography doing most of the design work.
The par-71 layout means at least one fewer par 5 than a conventional card, which tends to tighten the scoring and put a premium on precise iron play. This is a course that earns its reputation through setting and terrain, not length alone.
