Few golf courses on earth can match the sheer audacity of Yellowknife's setting. Situated in Canada's Northwest Territories — not Alberta, despite the "AB" abbreviation sometimes used — the club sits just 400 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle, making it one of the northernmost 18-hole golf courses in the world. The sub-arctic landscape means the course plays through the Canadian Shield's exposed bedrock, sparse boreal forest, and terrain shaped more by glaciers than by any architect's bulldozer. Permafrost and a brutally short growing season make simply maintaining turf here an achievement worth respecting.
What the course lacks in manicured perfection, it more than compensates for in atmosphere. Summer rounds are played under the midnight sun, with tee times extending deep into evenings that never fully darken — a surreal experience no resort in Myrtle Beach or Scottsdale can replicate. The greens are famously "preferred lies" territory, and sand traps are said to give way to gravel as often as sand.
This is golf stripped to something primal: you against the Shield, the wind off Great Slave Lake, and a season so fleeting it makes every round feel genuinely earned. Visitors come partly for the golf and partly just to say they played it.
