Few public courses in South Florida carry the history that Colony West does. The Championship Course opened in 1970 and quickly established itself as one of Broward County's most respected tests of golf, hosting a PGA Tour event — the Jackie Gleason Inverrary Classic used Colony West as an overflow venue — and drawing serious players for decades. Bruce Devlin and Robert von Hagge designed the layout, a pairing responsible for some of the most strategically interesting courses built in Florida during that era.
The course plays through a mature residential setting in Tamarac, northwest of Fort Lauderdale, where the flat South Florida terrain is shaped by water hazards and tree-lined corridors that demand accuracy off the tee. The par-71 layout leans on classic von Hagge-Devlin hallmarks: dramatic bunkering, greens with subtle but punishing contours, and a routing that rewards course management over raw power.
Colony West sits in a region where public-access golf is plentiful but quality varies widely — this one has consistently punched above its weight and remains a locals' benchmark for what everyday golf in Broward County can be.
