Few private club complexes in American golf match the scale and ambition of Desert Mountain, the sprawling Scottsdale development that Jack Nicklaus turned into one of his most personal architectural statements. The Chiricahua course is 1 of 6 — yes, 6 — Nicklaus-designed 18-hole courses contained within the community, a concentration of high-caliber desert golf that has no real parallel anywhere in the country. Each layout on the property carries its own identity and character, and Chiricahua holds its place among them as a genuine test of desert target golf at elevation in the Sonoran foothills north of Scottsdale.
The setting does much of the work. Desert Mountain sits in the high Sonoran Desert above the valley floor, where saguaro cactus, ocotillo, and rocky arroyos define the terrain and the air runs noticeably cooler and cleaner than the city below. The elevation brings dramatic views of the surrounding mountain ranges and separates the experience from the resort corridors farther south.
Membership here means access to a full complement of courses, a rarity that keeps the property feeling endlessly varied. Chiricahua takes its name from the Chiricahua Apache, grounding it in the deep history of this corner of the Southwest.
