Las Vegas is a city built on spectacle, but the golf here can surprise you with its sincerity. Painted Desert Golf Club takes its name seriously — Jay Morrish's 1987 design works with the Mojave landscape rather than against it, routing holes through natural desert washes, across rocky outcroppings, and alongside the native scrub and cacti that define this corner of the Southwest. It's one of the earlier courses to embrace the desert-as-feature philosophy that would come to define the best of Las Vegas golf: minimize turf, maximize terrain.
The result is a layout that plays firm and fast, where errant shots disappear into rock and brush and the penalty for imprecision is immediate. Morrish — who did some of his finest work in partnership with Tom Weiskopf — brought a deft hand to elevation changes and natural contours, giving Painted Desert a more rugged, authentic feel than many of the manicured resort layouts that followed it onto the Strip's periphery.
For visitors who want to experience Las Vegas golf with some genuine character behind it, Painted Desert remains a worthwhile detour from the city's showier, pricier options.
