Shawnee State Golf Course sits within Shawnee State Park in Scioto County, one of Ohio's largest and most rugged state park complexes. The surrounding landscape is part of the Appalachian Plateau — rolling, heavily forested terrain that gives this corner of southern Ohio a character quite different from the flat farmland most people associate with the state. The park encompasses thousands of acres of mixed hardwood forest along the Ohio River valley, and that same topography shapes the golf experience here.
As a state park course operated by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Shawnee fits a tradition Ohio does well: accessible, affordable public golf set against genuinely scenic surroundings. These layouts tend to reward local knowledge and play up the natural contours of the land rather than imposing artificial drama on it. Rounds here are less about prestige and more about being out in the woods in a part of Ohio that doesn't get nearly enough credit.
Friendship itself is a small community in an area more associated with outdoor recreation — hiking, fishing, camping — than golf, which means the course draws a mix of park visitors and a loyal regional following who know what they have.
