Kelseyville sits in the heart of Lake County, one of California's least-traveled wine regions, where pear orchards and vineyards spread across the hills surrounding Clear Lake — the largest natural freshwater lake entirely within the state. It's an area that moves at its own pace, and the golf here tends to reflect that character: unhurried, unpretentious, and rooted in the landscape rather than trying to compete with it.
Riviera Hills Golf & Recreation Club serves a community that doesn't have a lot of alternatives nearby, which gives the course a role beyond simple recreation. The "Recreation Club" designation hints at something broader than a standalone golf operation — the kind of facility where memberships mean something to locals and the course functions as a genuine community anchor rather than a destination product.
Lake County's terrain is volcanic in origin, shaped by the same geologic forces that produced Mount Konocti, the dormant volcano visible from much of the valley floor. Any course sitting in these hills contends with that rugged, uneven ground — which tends to produce routing with real character, even when the amenities stay modest.
