Few American clubs carry as much weight in golf history as Siwanoy. It was here, on this Bronxville course, that the very first PGA Championship was played in 1916 — Jim Barnes claiming the inaugural title over a match-play field that helped launch one of the sport's four major championships. That founding moment alone places Siwanoy in a rare category of American golf landmarks.
The course itself was designed by Tom Bendelow, the Scottish-born architect who shaped hundreds of layouts across the country in the early 20th century. Siwanoy sits in Westchester County, a region that has long been one of the most concentrated pockets of serious private club golf in the United States, with neighbors like Winged Foot, Quaker Ridge, and Wykagyl all within a short drive. The terrain is classic northeastern — rolling, tree-lined, and firm-turf-friendly in the right conditions.
As a private members' club, Siwanoy rewards those fortunate enough to play it with both a rigorous test and an unusually tangible connection to where professional golf in America formally began.
