Few municipal courses carry a name with more resonance than this one. Dr. Charles L. Sifford — a Charlotte native — broke the color barrier in professional golf when he became the first Black player to earn a PGA Tour card in 1961, and his career accomplishments eventually earned him the Presidential Medal of Freedom and induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame. Naming Charlotte's municipal layout in his honor is a meaningful tribute to a man who changed the sport permanently, and that legacy gives the course a distinct identity that no architect's signature could match.
