Ruidoso sits at roughly 6,900 feet in the Sacramento Mountains of southern New Mexico, a resort town that draws visitors escaping the desert heat of the lowlands. At that elevation the air is thin, the pines run thick, and a golf ball carries noticeably farther than the yardage markers suggest — a pleasant surprise for players used to sea-level courses. The surrounding Lincoln National Forest gives the area a genuine alpine character that sets it apart from most of the Southwest's desert layouts.
The "Links" name is a bit of a geographic liberty — there's no North Sea wind or fescue-covered dunes here — but mountain resort courses in this part of New Mexico tend to reward shot-making over raw power, with terrain that forces honest decisions on approach angles and club selection. Par 72 suggests a full, balanced test with room for both long holes and strategic shorter ones.
Ruidoso is also horse-racing country, home to Ruidoso Downs, and the town has a long identity as a cool-weather escape for Texans and Albuquerque residents alike. Golf here is very much part of that getaway culture — unhurried, scenic, and a genuine contrast to the flatlands most visitors left behind.
