Few courses in Ireland carry the weight of expectation that Druids Glen does. Designed by Pat Ruddy and Tom Craddock and opened in 1995, it quickly established itself as one of the finest parkland layouts on the island, earning the nickname "the Augusta of Ireland" for its immaculate conditioning, dramatic floral displays, and the sheer theatricality of its design. The course hosted the Irish Open on 4 consecutive occasions between 1996 and 1999, drawing the European Tour's best players and cementing its reputation on the international stage.
The setting in County Wicklow does much of the heavy lifting. The estate sits within the so-called Garden of Ireland, a county of wooded demesnes, gentle hills, and remarkably lush vegetation fed by the mild maritime climate rolling in off the Irish Sea. Ancient standing stones and archaeological remnants are woven into the landscape, lending the property a sense of history that extends well beyond golf.
The course plays through mature woodland and across carefully sculpted terrain, with water coming into play on several holes and the presentation consistently close to immaculate. It is a members' and resort experience built around occasion — the kind of round you plan rather than stumble into.
