Few public courses in the Pacific Northwest carry the kind of institutional weight that Eastmoreland does. Opened in 1917, it is one of the oldest public golf courses in Oregon, and its tree-lined fairways in southeast Portland have been a civic fixture for well over a century. The course was designed by H. Chandler Egan, the Oregon-based architect who also had a hand in shaping Pebble Beach, and that pedigree shows in a layout that rewards thoughtful play over raw power. Eastmoreland has consistently ranked among the top public courses in Oregon and has appeared on national lists of the best municipal tracks in the country.
The setting is genuinely beautiful. The course borders the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, and in spring the flowering shrubs along several holes create one of the more visually striking stretches of urban golf you'll find anywhere. Mature Douglas firs and oaks define the corridors throughout, giving the course a classic, parkland character that feels rooted rather than manufactured.
For Portland golfers, Eastmoreland occupies something close to sacred ground — a serious, walkable layout that has introduced generations of Oregonians to the game while remaining challenging enough to hold the interest of accomplished players.
