Hannut sits in the agricultural heartland of the Hesbaye plateau, a broad, gently rolling landscape of grain fields and limestone-rich soil in the province of Liège — far removed from the Ardennes forests to the south or the industrial Meuse valley to the north. It's quiet, open country where the horizon stretches wide and the wind can factor into play far more than the terrain itself suggests at first glance.

Avernas Golf Club takes its name from the nearby village of Avernas-le-Bauduin and occupies land that reflects the character of the plateau — open fairways, few dramatic elevation changes, and that particular quality of Belgian countryside light that shifts quickly with the weather. Courses built into working agricultural land like this tend to reward accuracy over power, with the wind doing much of the work that hills would do elsewhere.

The Hesbaye region has a modest but genuine golf culture, with several clubs drawing a mix of local members and players passing between Brussels, Liège, and Namur. Avernas offers a genuine club experience in a part of Belgium that most visitors simply drive through.
