Few golf destinations in the American Southwest carry the kind of weight that We-Ko-Pa does. Situated on Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation land northeast of Scottsdale, the club operates 2 distinct 18-hole courses — the Saguaro and the Cholla — both designed by Scott Miller and Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw respectively, carved through a high Sonoran Desert landscape that feels genuinely untouched. The terrain does most of the talking: boulders the size of automobiles, ancient saguaro cacti, and views stretching toward the McDowell Mountains in every direction. This is desert golf at its most dramatic and least manufactured.
The Cholla course, a Coore & Crenshaw design, draws particular admiration from architecture enthusiasts for its routing intelligence and restraint — minimal earthmoving, holes that work with the land rather than against it. We-Ko-Pa has earned consistent national rankings and a devoted following among serious golfers who prize authenticity over amenity-driven resort excess.
Fort McDowell sits on the edge of the greater Phoenix metro but feels a world removed from it. The surrounding Fountain Hills area offers stark, quiet beauty, and the club's tribal ownership gives it a cultural grounding that distinguishes it from the dozens of manicured resort layouts competing for attention across the Valley of the Sun.
