Few courses anywhere carry the weight of history that Royal Birkdale does. Laid out among the towering sand hills of the Sefton Coast, the club was founded in 1889 and earned its Royal prefix in 1951. The course owes its modern character largely to a redesign by Fred Hawtree and J.H. Taylor in the 1930s, which established the distinctive routing that runs holes through the valleys between the dunes rather than over them — a design philosophy that produces unusually fair links golf, where wild bounces are rare and ball-striking is rewarded honestly.
Birkdale's Open Championship record is among the richest in the rota. It has hosted the Open 10 times, with moments etched into golf's collective memory: Arnold Palmer's iconic recovery shot through the shrubbery in 1961, Lee Trevino's triumph in 1971, Tom Watson's victory in 1983, and Jordan Spieth's dramatic final-round charge in 2017. A commemorative plaque marks Palmer's 6th-hole recovery — one of sport's genuinely rare monuments on an active golf course.
Southport itself sits on the Lancashire coast northwest of Liverpool, a traditional English seaside town whose links-friendly climate brings genuine maritime conditions — wind, sea fret, and fast-running turf that make every round feel distinctly earned.
