Wrotham Heath

Few heathland courses in the south of England carry quite the quiet authority of Wrotham Heath. Laid out on the greensand ridge of the North Downs in Kent, the course occupies a stretch of sandy, acidic soil that produces the firm, fast-running turf heathland golf is prized for — heather, gorse, and silver birch framing virtually every hole. The design is credited to James Braid, the five-time Open Champion whose prolific work across British heathland and parkland left a fingerprint on the golden age of British golf course architecture.

The North Downs setting places it in genuinely beautiful countryside, close to the M25 corridor yet feeling removed from it — the ridge offers glimpses across the Kentish Weald on clear days. At par 70, the course plays shorter than many heathland tests, but accuracy off the tee matters enormously when heather lines the corridors so closely.
