Few courses anywhere in the world carry the quiet authority of Kingston Heath. Laid out in 1925 by Dan Soutar and later refined by Alister MacKenzie — whose brief but transformative visit in 1926 reshaped the bunkering into something close to genius — the club has spent a century earning its place among the elite. It consistently ranks as one of the top 2 or 3 courses in Australia and regularly appears in global top-50 lists, a reputation built on design integrity rather than manufactured spectacle.
The course sits on Melbourne's Sandbelt, that extraordinary corridor of sandy heathland stretching through Melbourne's southeastern suburbs where the soil, the native grasses, and the light combine to produce conditions more reminiscent of Surrey or Fife than suburban Victoria. Fast, firm, and fiercely true, the turf rewards precision and punishes anything loose. MacKenzie's bunkering — dramatic, flashed-face hazards placed with surgical intent — remains the defining feature, demanding not just accuracy but real imagination.
Kingston Heath is a private members' club, and access for visiting golfers requires advance arrangement. For those who manage it, the experience tends to be genuinely humbling.
