Grafton sits in the heart of Taylor County, deep in the hill country of north-central West Virginia, where the Tygart Valley River winds through forested ridges before widening into Tygart Lake. The state park surrounding that reservoir is one of West Virginia's more scenic recreational destinations, and the golf course takes full advantage of terrain that was never going to be flat or forgiving — the kind of rolling, wooded Appalachian landscape that puts a premium on course management over raw distance.
As a state park course, Tygart Lake GC serves a broad mix of players, from serious locals who know every slope to vacationers exploring the lake region in warmer months. That public, accessible character tends to define the experience: unpretentious, rooted in the outdoors, and more memorable for its surroundings than any single design flourish.
West Virginia's golf season runs roughly April through October before the mountain weather closes things down, and the fall window — when the hardwoods turn across the hillsides — makes for some of the more visually striking rounds you'll find anywhere in the Mid-Atlantic region.
