Few regions of Finland feel as purely lake-country as the area around Mikkeli, a city in South Savo whose surrounding landscape is defined by a seemingly endless puzzle of forested islands, bays, and waterways. Golf here means playing within that scenery rather than beside it — the natural topography of glacially shaped ridges, pines, and birch stands does much of the architectural work on its own.
Mikkelin Golf operates as a member-owned club in the Finnish tradition, offering a welcoming but earnest competitive culture typical of provincial Finnish clubs that take their golf seriously despite the short northern season. The course makes genuine use of the terrain's natural contours, with elevation changes and tree-lined corridors that demand both shape and strategy off the tee.
The Finnish golf season runs roughly from early May through October, and South Savo's long summer days give players extraordinary late-evening rounds in June and July — the kind of soft, golden light that lingers past 10 p.m. and makes even a pedestrian round feel like something worth remembering.
