Few courses on the Gulf Coast carry the kind of architectural pedigree that Kiva Dunes does. Designed by Jerry Pate — the former U.S. Open champion turned acclaimed designer — and opened in 1995, the course was built on a stretch of Alabama beachfront that gave Pate genuine raw material to work with: shifting sand dunes, natural wetlands, and sweeping views of the Gulf of Mexico. The result is a layout that feels more like a links than anything else in the region, with exposed fairways, uneven lies, and a wind that can completely reframe the challenge from one round to the next.
Gulf Shores itself sits at the tip of a barrier peninsula flanked by the Gulf and Mobile Bay, and that geography shapes everything about how Kiva Dunes plays. Salt air, afternoon sea breezes, and firm sandy turf give the course a character you simply won't find inland across the Deep South.
Consistently ranked among Alabama's top courses, Kiva Dunes has also served as a venue for serious competitive golf, hosting Alabama Golf Association events over the years. It plays as a genuine test for accomplished players while remaining one of the more visually dramatic public-access rounds available anywhere in the state.
