Few municipal courses in Southern California carry the civic weight of General Old, a public layout operated by the City of Riverside that has served the local golfing community for decades. Named in honor of General Ulysses S. Grant (Riverside's founding fathers had a flair for the grand gesture), the course sits within Fairmount Park, one of the region's oldest urban green spaces, where mature trees and the proximity to the Santa Ana River give it a character that most daily-fee tracks simply cannot manufacture.
Riverside itself occupies a compelling stretch of the Inland Empire — far enough inland to bake under genuine desert-adjacent heat in summer, yet softened by elevation and the old citrus-belt landscape that once made this area famous. Golfers here deal with firm, sun-baked turf and reliably minimal wind interference, which tends to flatter ball-strikers and punish anyone who misses greens into hardpan lies.
At par 72 over 18 holes, General Old plays as a straightforward, walkable test suited to all skill levels. It is the kind of honest municipal layout where regulars play multiple times a week, twilight rates fill the tee sheet, and the game remains refreshingly unpretentious.
