Few courses in the Pacific Northwest can match the sheer drama of Desert Canyon's setting. Designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1993, the layout tumbles through the rugged coulees and basalt formations above the Columbia River in north-central Washington — terrain that has far more in common with eastern Oregon high desert than with the rain-soaked courses west of the Cascades. The Nicklaus design leans into the natural contours rather than fighting them, routing holes across dramatic elevation changes with the river and surrounding canyon walls providing a backdrop that stops first-time visitors mid-swing.
Orondo sits in Chelan County, a region better known for apple orchards and Lake Chelan than for golf, which gives Desert Canyon an almost surprising sense of discovery. The climate here is genuinely arid — hot, dry summers and sparse vegetation — so the course plays firm and fast for much of the season.
As a resort destination, Desert Canyon attracts golfers making a dedicated trip rather than a casual round, and the course rewards that commitment. The routing demands both power and precision, with canyon edges and sparse desert rough offering honest, unforgiving consequences for wayward shots.
