Port Kenny sits on the remote western fringe of South Australia's Eyre Peninsula, a stretch of coastline where the Southern Ocean dominates the horizon and the nearest major city is a very long drive away. This is outback-meets-coast Australia — sparse, wind-scoured, and genuinely wild — and the golf club here is very much a product of that isolation and community spirit.
Like many clubs in small Australian country towns, Port Kenny Golf Club almost certainly began as a labour of love by local residents who cleared, laid out, and maintained a course themselves. These outback and coastal clubs are a proud tradition across regional Australia, often featuring sand scrapes or treated browns rather than grass greens, and fairways that reflect the native landscape rather than fight against it.
Out here, golf is as much about belonging to a place as it is about the game itself. A round at Port Kenny would put you squarely in one of Australia's most remote and unhurried corners, with the peninsula's rugged coastal character present at every turn.
