Few settings in American golf are as visually arresting as Ventana Canyon. Tom Fazio designed 2 courses here — the Mountain and the Canyon — carved into the Santa Catalina foothills northeast of Tucson, and both opened in the mid-1980s as the centerpiece of the Loews resort. The Mountain Course, in particular, has earned a long-standing reputation as one of Arizona's finest, famous for its par-3 3rd hole, where players fire across a dramatic desert wash to a green framed by towering saguaro cactus — an image that has appeared in countless publications as a symbol of Sonoran Desert golf at its most spectacular.
Playing here means navigating elevation changes, rocky arroyos, and tight desert corridors where a stray shot finds cactus and scrub rather than forgiving rough. The Sonoran Desert is not a passive backdrop — it's a co-designer, demanding shot shape and course management that a pure parkland game won't prepare you for.
Tucson sits at roughly 2,400 feet of elevation, which keeps temperatures more manageable than Phoenix and extends the comfortable playing season. The Santa Catalinas rising behind the property give every round a genuine sense of scale.
