South Hills Country Club has long served as the social and sporting anchor of Jamestown's golf community, a private members' club whose roots stretch back into the early decades of the twentieth century. Jamestown sits in the southwestern corner of New York State, in Chautauqua County, where the foothills of the Allegheny Plateau shape a landscape of rolling terrain, dense hardwood forests, and the kind of four-season severity that demands a course built to endure. That topography almost certainly influenced how the layout was designed, rewarding players who manage elevation changes and work the ball through tree-lined corridors.
As a private club, South Hills carries the particular character that comes from decades of the same families walking the same fairways — a culture of accumulated tradition, member rivalries, and institutional memory that no public-access venue quite replicates.
Chautauqua County is better known to many as a cultural destination, home to the famous Chautauqua Institution, but it has a quiet, earnest golf tradition of its own. South Hills sits comfortably at the center of it.
