Few municipal courses in America occupy real estate quite like this one. The Presidio of San Francisco — a former U.S. Army post turned national parkland — is one of the most dramatic pieces of urban geography in the country, and the golf course that winds through it shares in that inheritance. Tall Monterey pines and cypress line nearly every hole, creating a sense of enclosure unusual for a course so close to open bay and ocean. The fog that rolls in off the Pacific is a genuine playing condition here, not atmosphere.
The course sits on land the Army maintained for recreation going back generations, and that history gives the place a weight that newer facilities simply can't manufacture. It was redesigned by Arnold Palmer's design group and reopened in 1995 as part of the Presidio's transition to national park status, bringing the layout up to modern standards while preserving the essential parkland character.
This is public golf in a city not exactly overrun with accessible courses, and the setting makes it genuinely special — a round here is as much about the surroundings as the scorecard.
