Thyolo sits in the highlands of southern Malawi, a district that has been synonymous with tea production since the colonial era. The surrounding estates roll across the hillsides in dense, manicured green, and the air at this elevation carries a coolness that sets the region apart from Malawi's lower, hotter plains. It is an unusual and genuinely striking part of the country to find a golf course.
Mbawa Golf Club occupies this tea-country landscape, and an 18-hole, par-72 layout here almost certainly means navigating terrain shaped by that agricultural history — undulating ground, natural vegetation breaks, and views across the plantation hills that no scorecard entry can adequately describe. Courses in this part of Africa tend to reward local knowledge, where subtle slopes and firm, sun-baked turf behave differently from anything a visiting golfer might expect.
The Thyolo golf scene is modest by any measure, which makes Mbawa something of a community anchor — the kind of club where the 19th hole matters as much as the 18, and where regulars carry decades of institutional memory about how the course actually plays.
