Port Matilda sits in Centre County, Pennsylvania, in the ridge-and-valley terrain of the Appalachian Mountains — a landscape that has shaped countless inland Pennsylvania courses with elevation change, tree-lined corridors, and views that open unexpectedly as fairways crest hillsides. The name Skytop Mountain suggests the course makes full use of that topography, and in this part of the state, courses built into the folds of the Appalachians tend to reward local knowledge: reading wind, understanding how sloped lies affect ball flight, and knowing when to attack and when to simply find the fairway.
Centre County is home to Penn State University in nearby State College, which anchors a small but genuine golf community in what is otherwise rural central Pennsylvania. The region draws outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds, and a mountain golf course here serves that sensibility — expect wooded surroundings, seasonal conditions that shift considerably from spring through fall, and a quiet far from the resort corridors of bigger golf destinations.
As a par 72 layout, Skytop Mountain offers a full complement of holes in a setting where the land itself does most of the heavy lifting.
