Few places in the Algarve reward a round quite like Vila Monte, a layout that trades the region's more exposed, wind-battered links territory for something altogether more intimate. Set in the quieter eastern Algarve near Moncarapacho — well away from the resort density of Vilamoura and Vale do Lobo — the course sits within a rural landscape of orange and almond groves, rolling hills, and the kind of unhurried Portuguese countryside that the western Algarve's golf corridor rarely offers.
The course plays through mature vegetation and varied terrain, with elevation changes that generate some genuinely interesting driving angles and approach shots. Water comes into play on several holes, and the tree-lined corridors keep errant hitters honest without ever feeling punishing for its own sake. It's a layout that rewards local knowledge and a thoughtful short game.
Vila Monte is affiliated with the boutique hotel of the same name, giving it a relaxed, house-course atmosphere rather than the slick tournament feel of the Algarve's bigger names. That lower profile is, for many visitors, exactly the point.
