Tom Fazio's fingerprints are all over southeastern Pennsylvania's golf landscape, and Hartefeld National stands as one of his more celebrated contributions to the region. Opened in 1995, the course was carved through the rolling Chester County countryside and quickly earned a reputation as one of Pennsylvania's top daily-fee layouts, appearing regularly on state and regional best-of lists throughout its history. The Fazio design makes full use of the land's natural contours, with tree-lined fairways, strategic bunkering, and a routing that rewards thoughtful shot selection over raw power.
Chester County itself has long been prime golf territory — the gently rolling Piedmont terrain, with its mature hardwoods and open meadows, lends itself naturally to parkland-style design. Avondale sits in the heart of Pennsylvania's mushroom-growing country, not far from the Delaware border, a quiet agricultural corner that feels removed from the suburban sprawl creeping outward from Philadelphia.
Hartefeld plays as a genuine test for serious golfers while remaining accessible enough to draw a broad range of players. The conditioning and design pedigree give it a private-club feel that distinguishes it from typical public-access golf in the area.
