Few Edinburgh courses sit so dramatically in the shadow of the Pentland Hills as Swanston, whose fairways climb and tumble across the southern fringes of the city in a way that makes the urban sprawl feel genuinely distant. The hills form a constant backdrop, and the terrain here is proper upland turf — firm, fast, and uneven in the way that rewards local knowledge and punishes complacency. It's the kind of course where the wind off the Pentlands can turn a routine afternoon into something considerably more demanding.

The area carries its own literary associations: Robert Louis Stevenson spent boyhood summers at Swanston Cottage, just below the hills, and there's a quiet sense of that older, wilder Edinburgh out here on the edge of the city.

At par 69, the layout doesn't pretend to be something it isn't — this is a member's course built for regular play rather than theatre, but the setting alone elevates it well above the ordinary. Edinburgh golf doesn't get much more characterful than this corner of the Pentland foothills.
