Hitra Golfklubb

Hitra Golfklubb occupies one of the more dramatically situated pieces of golfing ground in Norway — on Hitra island, a rugged Atlantic outpost off the Trøndelag coast reached by undersea tunnel from the mainland. The island is better known for its wild deer herds, cod fishing, and fjord-side scenery than for golf, which gives the club a genuinely remote, end-of-the-road character that sets it apart from the country's more polished layouts. Sandstad sits on the southwestern shore, and the surrounding landscape of low heathland, rocky outcrops, and open water defines both the look and the feel of the course.

Playing here means reckoning with the North Sea climate. Wind is the constant companion and the primary defense — it shifts direction unpredictably and can turn a manageable hole into something far more demanding within the space of a single round. Summer days are long this far north, and evening rounds in June or July offer an almost surreal quality of light that flatters even a modest scorecard.

This is a community club in the truest sense, built and maintained by an island population of roughly 4,000 people who take genuine pride in having a course at all.
