Few municipal courses carry a name with as much moral weight as this one. Ted Rhodes was one of the pioneering Black golfers of the mid-20th century — a Nashville native who became one of the finest players of his era, mentored by heavyweight champion Joe Louis, and repeatedly denied entry to PGA Tour events because of the organization's whites-only clause. He fought those restrictions in court and on the course, and naming this city-owned layout after him is a deliberate act of remembrance.
The course sits along the Cumberland River in north Nashville, a part of the city that has seen enormous change in recent decades. The terrain is relatively open and walkable, characteristic of the flat river-bottom land in this stretch, and the layout has long served as an accessible, affordable entry point into the game for generations of Nashville residents across every background.
