Par 68 layouts often get dismissed as lesser tests, but a course sitting within or beside the Chatsworth Estate in the Derbyshire Dales earns a different kind of respect entirely. This is Peak District golf — short in par but played through some of the most dramatic pastoral landscape in England, where the hills roll steeply and the River Derwent cuts through the valley below. The estate itself, home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and one of Britain's grandest country houses, sets a backdrop that no scorecard figure can adequately represent.
Bakewell is the market town at the heart of the Peak District National Park, a place better known for its pudding than its par, but the golf here draws from the same unhurried, rooted-in-place character that defines the whole area. Expect moorland-influenced turf, unpredictable upland winds, and an atmosphere that feels genuinely removed from the modern game's busier circuits.
A round here is less about the number you post and more about where you're standing when you post it — elevated fairways, long views across Derbyshire limestone country, and a sense that the land was doing something interesting long before anyone laid out a hole on it.
